About this tool: Voltage Divider
Calculate a voltage divider output and supply current with or without a parallel load on its lower resistor.
R₁ is the upper resistor and R₂ the resistor from output to ground. In loaded mode the load is in parallel with R₂, lowering the effective resistance and output voltage. Positive resistor values and a nonnegative source voltage are required. Values are nominal and assume ideal components.
How the calculation works
Worked example
| Mode | Without load |
| Voltage, V | 12 |
| R₁ | 1000 |
| R₂ | 2000 |
Vout = 8 V; I = 0.004 A
Questions and answers
What does this tool do?
Calculate a voltage divider output and supply current with or without a parallel load on its lower resistor. R₁ is the upper resistor and R₂ the resistor from output to ground. In loaded mode the load is in parallel with R₂, lowering the effective resistance and output voltage. Positive resistor values and a nonnegative source voltage are required. Values are nominal and assume ideal components.
What affects precision and input format?
Nominal ideal components are used; component losses and tolerances are excluded.
Where are the calculations performed?
The calculation runs in your browser. You can use the tool without installing software.
