Forces of Nature – a steam motorcycle that accelerates faster than jet bikes
At the recent Festival of Power in the village of Podington (Bedfordshire) on the Santa Pod track, the 400‑metre “steam” motorcycle Force of Nature delivered impressive results. It became the second fastest motorcycle worldwide over a quarter‑mile distance, losing only to a hydrogen peroxide jet bike.

How the machine works
1. Preparation
In a high‑pressure tank (up to 50 atm) there is 120 L of deionised water, preheated to 260 °C using the “Mother Ship” – a kerosene burner on purified fuel.
2. Ejection
When the steering wheel button is pressed, nitrogen valves open: water is expelled through a nozzle at supersonic speed, instantly turning into steam. The volume expands by 1,620 times, creating a powerful sonic “blow” and ejecting about 40 L of water per second.
3. Acceleration
After launch the rider simply holds the button – while there is hot water reserve, the motorcycle keeps accelerating. There is no power adjustment: steam either flows or it doesn’t.
Project development
- Creator: 62‑year‑old engineer‑enthusiast Graham Sax and his wife Diana.
- Workplace: workshop in North Yorkshire.
- Development duration: about six years, now at stage five.
- Recent upgrades: extended chassis, new seat (pilot tolerates up to 6 g), carbon shields, and a 44‑kW burner that speeds up preheating.
Future plans
Graham Sax aims to accelerate the motorcycle in under five seconds over a quarter‑mile. However, the technology is not intended for road use due to fundamental limitations and high danger to both rider and bystanders.
