New “coatings” for urban panels: how to make them more aesthetic

Classic solar panels often spoil the appearance of historic districts, so engineers have long been looking for ways to hide them in an urban environment without losing efficiency. Recently a group of scientists from Germany proposed a solution inspired by nature.

What served as the source of the idea?
Butterflies create bright patterns on their wings not with pigments but thanks to light interference passing through nanoscale scales. This allows them to look colorful, yet without using paint – a key requirement for solar panels where extra color can reduce efficiency.

ShadeCut technology
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) developed a technology called ShadeCut. It lets you “paint” any modern panel into a stylized look of stone masonry, roof tiles or marble, while reducing power by only 5 %.

The process is simple:

1. A special coating is applied to the panel surface.
2. Using a laser or milling machine, material is removed so that the desired pattern remains – for example, a tile design.

Thus the panel becomes almost indistinguishable from traditional building materials.

How it looks in action
Dr. Marin Heinrich, one of the project leaders, notes: “Modules with ShadeCut can look like stone masonry or roof tiles and match color perfectly.” This is especially useful for building facades, roof elements, balcony railings, and most importantly during the restoration of historic structures where strict standards often limit the use of solar energy.
