Meta will force 7,000 employees to move into AI-related positions
Meta plans to restructure its workforce to accelerate AI development
* Transitions and layoffs simultaneously
In response to the growing role of artificial intelligence, Meta announced that about 7,000 employees will be transferred to new departments focused on developing tools and applications for AI. At the same time, the company plans to cut roughly 8,000 jobs and close 6,000 open positions.
* New “AI‑driven” divisions
Transferred staff will join structures specifically designed for working with AI. They will have fewer layers of management compared to previous hierarchies, which HR head Janel Gale says will boost the company’s productivity.
* How it happens
In a letter dated May 20, employees received instructions to work from home and expect further notifications about potential new roles. Some have already received transfer offers; at the same time others will receive layoff letters.
* Financial context
Meta ties these changes to an efficiency program and a desire to offset costs for AI technologies. This year the company plans to invest between $115 billion and $135 billion, mainly in AI development, while replacing its metaverse program with data‑center hubs of tens of gigawatts.
* Conditions for those laid off
Employees who are let go will receive severance: pay for 16 weeks plus two weeks for each year worked at the company. By the end of 2025 Meta’s workforce was about 78,000 people, so cutting 8,000 employees means a reduction of roughly 10 %.
Thus, Meta is simultaneously reorganizing part of its staff for new AI projects and reducing job numbers as part of a cost‑saving strategy that concentrates resources on artificial intelligence.
