Microsoft Announces Revolutionary Water Savings in Data Centers
At the recent Microsoft Build conference, CEO Satya Nadella explained how new AI data centers can consume water almost as little as a typical restaurant. According to him, “the cooling loop is filled once, after which the data center operates with zero water consumption.”

How It Works
1. Closed loop – during construction 90 % of the tank is filled with water, which then circulates throughout operation.
2. Ambient air – after initial filling, the water is used to cool equipment; it is replenished only in the hottest conditions.
3. Chiller system – heat from equipment is transferred to chillers where it is dissipated by large fans, and then the water returns to the loop.
This scheme saves millions of cubic meters of water annually.
Practical Implementation
Currently, the technology is used only at Microsoft’s Fairwater data center in Mount Pleasant (Wisconsin). The company is already building new sites planned to use this system.
Microsoft aims for a positive water balance by 2030, following Google’s example of “replenishing more water than it consumes.”
Limitations and Outlook
* Azure serves over 500 data centers across 80 regions worldwide; most were built before Fairwater.
* No overall modernization program has been announced yet, so Satya Nadella’s statement applies only to a few sites.
Nevertheless, the adoption of a closed loop already demonstrates significant potential for reducing water consumption in the data center industry.
