Samsung changes head of TV division in response to intensified competition

Chinese LCD panel manufacturers have long displaced Japanese and South Korean players from the display market, and now they are also entering the television segment. In this context, Samsung Electronics for the first time in two years decided to replace the leader of its “television technology” unit. The position has been filled by former marketing head Lee Won‑jin.

Lee Won‑jin came to the company from Google, where he worked until 2014. According to Samsung management, his experience in global marketing will help strengthen the brand’s position in the TV segment. The previous head of Visual Display Business, Yong Seok‑woo, will remain with the company as an advisor.

Samsung usually conducts personnel reshuffles in December each year, but this transfer occurred earlier and without a public explanation of the reasons. It is expected that the new leader will implement reforms aimed at boosting Samsung’s position in the television market.

The situation is escalating: in March Sony entered into a strategic agreement with Chinese TCL, thereby intensifying competition. Nikkei reported that Samsung had considered ending sales of home appliances and TVs in the Chinese market by the end of this year due to growing competition from local companies. In the first quarter of this year, profit from the TV segment fell because of demand stagnation and rising costs for materials and components.
