Updating the Autonomous Systems Directive
Trump instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to update the existing directive on autonomous armed systems within 90 days. The new version must ensure:

* a ban on using AI for censorship of free speech and illegal surveillance.

The memorandum targets three key objectives:

1. Accelerate AI integration from various suppliers to avoid bottlenecks;
2. Update the Department of Defense’s recommendations on autonomous systems in line with the latest technological advances;
3. Protect critical systems by requiring prior approval before modifying or disabling any AI system upon which military personnel rely.

The memorandum arose after a dispute between AI developer Anthropic and the Pentagon. The company was deemed a threat to the supply chain due to its refusal to distance itself from using its models in autonomous armed systems and mass surveillance tools, contrary to U.S. requirements.
